SCTV Announces Acquisition of WXBJ Cool 94.1 LP-FM

Salisbury Community TV and Media Center (SCTV) is thrilled to announce the recent agreement for the acquisition of WXBJ Cool 94.1 LP-FM, from Good Neighbor Station Inc., marking a significant expansion of our community media outreach and service. The transition of ownership comes as part of a mutual agreement, with both parties jointly applying for the license transfer to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Chair of SCTV, Gil Medeiros, expresses enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "This acquisition represents a milestone in SCTV's mission to enhance our local media landscape. It's a step forward in preserving the unique cultural and musical heritage of Salisbury, while embracing the future of community broadcasting."

The station is now only streaming live 24/7 at www.wxbj941.com but is set to go back on air in late June or early July, continuing to delight listeners with the Seacoast Oldies music format they've come to love, complemented by a selection of local civic and cultural content. This effort is an extension to SCTV's dedication to its public, educational, and government access TV mission, and the organization is excited about incorporating community feedback into their programming.

An Act to Modernize Funding for Community Media Programming

Salisbury’s state legislators have both signed on as co-sponsors. Sen. Bruce Tarr and Rep. Dawne Shand are big supporters of community media. But they need a reminder to contact their leadership.  There is a deadline of April 8 to pass this legislation out of the joint committee and onto the floors of both houses.  Please email a quick note of your support of S.34/H.74  to:  Bruce.Tarr@masenate.gov, Dawne.Shand@mahouse.gov, Michael.Moore@masenate.gov, Tricia.Farley-Bouvier@mahouse.gov

Cable television revenues have sustained public, educational, and government access TV programming for decades.  But subscriptions are way down, and community media faces a real threat.  Proposed legislation would establish a comprehensive statewide policy concerning streaming entertainment services.

The idea is simple:  collect an assessment from companies that make money selling digital entertainment while using public rights of way. Cable companies contribute, but streaming companies pay nothing. The bill would place an assessment of 5% on streaming media that would be split in the following way: 20% would stay with the state, 40% would go to the municipality, and 40% would go to the community media centers that serve them.
